High Sugar Content, Processed Foods are Causing Cancer. – This Is My Shocked Face

Not to beat a dead horse or anything,

  but I have here another study (n=104,000+) that shows a dramatic INCREASE in cancer rates among those who eat a high sugar, high process carbs diet. In fact, the study shows that a mere 10% increase in use of sugar laden, highly processed foods, yields a GREATER THAN 10% increase in cancer risk - especially colorectal and breast cancers.

This study comes to us from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort (2009-17), in which 104,980 participants had their dietary habits collected every 24 hours. About 3300 different foods were in the records and those foods were categorized according the NOVA standards of processed foods.

According to the NOVA standards, and as reported here previously, "highly processed food" includes (yum!) :

Flavouring agents, colours, emulsifiers, humectants, non-sugar sweeteners, and other cosmetic additives are often added to these products to imitate sensorial properties of unprocessed or minimally processed foods and their culinary preparations or to disguise undesirable qualities of the final product.(Emphasis added.)

Highly processed foods are designed for long shelf-life and maximum profit first, not good nutrition. They deliver calories and chemicals which, outside of the photos of the box/bag/jar, would not be recognized as "food" at all.

Let's have a look at the "foods" included in this study and see if there is something of a common factor.

Fizzy Drinks - Sugar
Chocolate (milk chocolate, by the way) - Sugar
Sweets - By Definition, Sugar

Breakfast Cereal - Sugar, Sugar, and More Sugar
Energy Bars - Um... Oh yes, Sugar.

Ready Meals with Ready-Made Sauces - Sugar and things that belong in a chemistry set rather than a dinner plate.
Powdered Slimming Mixes - Fiberless Carbs
Pre-Prepared Pies - Sugar and Fiberless Carbs
Chicken Nuggets - Sugar and Fiberless Carbs. (And don't forget the 90% sugar "sauces.")
Reconstituted Meat Products - Sugar.
Powdered Soup - Sugar and Fiberless Carbs.

The study leads to the conclusion that reducing the amount of highly processed - therefore, highly sugared - foods reduces the risks of cancer. According to the study, this is especially so for breast cancer.

I would suggest reading the responses to the study, on the BMJ site. Obviously this study's conclusions fit within a confessed confirmation bias here at Death to Sugar. And the responses point out some issues with the study. However, none argue with the logical conclusion of the study, that a better diet reduces needless health risks.
