N.I.H. Removes Sugar From Obese Kids’ Diets: Kids Get Healthier. (Shocker)

The National Institute of Health

really doesn't carry a lot of weight in my nutritional health book. The fact is that they have advocated a diet that has increased obesity more than 30% over the last few decades. It was the NIH and other such groups who pushed the "High Carb - Low Fat" diet on all of us. They frequently stressed (and still do, oddly) that FAT makes you fat, and foods high in Cholesterol, especially foods high in "evil" saturated fat, clog your arteries. All the while telling people to cut back "a little" on sugar, rather than dumping it whole cloth.

Consequently, I was surprised to find this article from the NIH. The study found (this is my shocked face) that "cutting added sugar in children's diets can improve their overall heath incredibly quickly." Imagine that. Stopping consumption of a dietary and metabolic poison - sugar - improves health. Who would have thought it?

The study focused on 43 obese kids, whose diet was changed by sharply reducing the amount of sugar they consumed. These kids all had various other medical issues such as metabolic disorder, and high blood pressure. Sugary meals were replaced, but the kids could have all the fatty, non-sugary foods they wanted. Overall calories were not reduced.

In the end, several of the kids had improved liver and kidney function. Blood pressure fell, triglycerides and LDL also fell. Their metabolic health increased in multiple ways. They even had small reductions in weight. (Which was insignificant in the sense that their metabolic health improved. It's not the fat that kills you, it's the metabolic diseases.)

Now let's look at the study's conclusion. There is an important word in there -

Sugar and obesity rates

"Isocaloric fructose restriction improved surrogate metabolic parameters in children with obesity and metabolic syndrome irrespective of weight change."
The word of the day, and the word of all of my posts here is "fructose." It is fructose - the sweet molecule in common sugar - that causes all of sugar's damage.
Dr. Robert Lustig (Author of "Fat Chance") is quoted in the article - “This paper says we can turn a child’s metabolic health around in 10 days without changing calories and without changing weight – just by taking the added sugars out of their diet. From a clinical standpoint, from a health care standpoint, that’s very important.”

Of course the NIH trots out a "Low Fat - High Carb" relic, to caution us that other, un-named, unsourced, "studies", don't show such results.
The article ends by saying - "Scientists and nutritionists hope to expand on this study to see if the findings can be replicated." Dear readers, you can "replicate" this NOW. There IS NO USDA recommended daily allowance of sugar, because you do not NEED a single microgram of fructose to live or to be healthy.
These kids were off sugar for a mere ten (10) days, and saw significant health benefits. Can you imagine how YOUR health might improve if you dump sugar for 30 days? I'm going to issue a challenge in my next post, and I've got a few friends who are already IN that challenge.

Are you 30 days from a healthier life?
